Shishi Guardian Lion Dog 1850

Antique Japanese Bronze Shishi (Guardian Lion Dog) Koro Incense Burner, hand-crafted using the traditional lost-wax casting technique between 1850 and 1880 (Edo - Meiji era).
This heavy, museum-quality sculpture depicts a powerful Shishi standing triumphantly with one paw resting atop a ribbed brocade ball (temari). In Asian culture, the Shishi or Foo Dog is revered as a mythical protector that guards the home against negative energy, bringing wealth and good fortune.
Exquisite Craftsmanship & Mechanics:
What makes this censer rare and highly collectible is its specialized multi-part construction. The magnificent flame tail and the ribbed ball were cast separately from the main body.
Designed for function as well as form, the incense is placed directly inside the opening on the lion's back. When lit, the burning incense smoke billows gracefully out of the Shishi's fiercely detailed, open mouth.
As a testament to its authentic hand-crafted origin, the original inner earth mould residue remains beautifully preserved and visible inside the casting.
