Antique Baku Japan temple wood sculpture rural mountain 1800 Miya-Daiku craft

Antique Baku temple sculpture by Miya-Daiku wood master Buddhist temple wood carving. Kibana (木鼻), a traditional Japanese architectural wood carving used to decorate Buddhist temple architecture. Baku (獏) mythological beast in Japanese folklore recognized by its elephant-like trunk, tusks, and claws. Original redish pigment still visible on surface. 
Hand carving from solid Japanese cedar tree wood block. Placed in to wood frame made from old wood from temple structure. Medium good conditions, wear from time and long exposure. Antique Japanese rural Buddhist/Shinto sculpture.

Period: 1800 - 1900 Edo-Meiji era

Dimensions: each H 24 L 30 W 18 cm, total weight 1.100kg + wrapping
