Description:

Antique South Indian Marapachi Bommai Hand Carved Wooden Doll 1880

Add a rare piece of global folk art to your collection with this authentic, antique Marapachi Bommai (wooden doll) from South India. Found in Japan, this piece likely traveled through historic trade networks or folk art collections (Mingei). It showcases beautiful, rustic craftsmanship and a stunning aged patina.

• History: Traditionally gifted to brides or displayed during the Navaratri Golu festival, these dolls are treasured family heirlooms.

• Artistry: Features a hand-carved female form with a distinct tiered hairstyle, expressive features, and a dress adorned with hand-incised diamond crosshatch patterns.

• Material: Carved from a single piece of dense, heavy South Indian hardwood. The wood has aged beautifully, creating a rich dark brown color with warm undertones.

• Condition: medium good antique condition. Shows honest wear, deep oxidization, and manual chisel marks on the base that confirm its genuine age (late 19th to early 20th century). No major breaks or repairs except for long handling marking.

• Base Diameter: 4.2 cm (approx. 1.65 inches)
